French Know-How to Modernise Baltic Grid

GRTGaz. the networks subsidiary of French energy company Engie, has been selected by Latvia's Conexus Baltic Grid to modernise the transmission system and support the energy transition, the parties said January 18. Conexus has to lower its carbon footprint, according to the objectives of the European Union's Green Deal.

Conexus Baltic Grid runs a 1,188-km pipeline system and a major storage facility in Incukalns. Modernising the infrastructure and managing the energy transition has given the company new challenges, it said. GRTgaz also has good knowledge of the European networks, it said, but this is the French company’s first partnership in this region of the EU.

GRTGaz will contribute its technology, project management, research and development and IT know-how to the partnership.

“European gas infrastructure has to adapt to the new challenges in the coming years and we are proud to put our expertise in hydrogen, the energy transition and grid maintenance at the disposal of Conexus Baltic Grid,” said GRTGaz, adding that its aim was to expand internationally. It has already signed partnership agreements with German grid operators Ontras and Creos.
