Fracking protestors have warned of “unacceptable risks” to people and the environment in Wales as a result of shale gas exploration, on the eve of a hearing into its potential impact.

Supporters and opponents of the controversial process have presented evidence to the Welsh Affairs committee, which will on Tuesday quiz witnesses as the wider debate intensifies.

Environmental campaigning charity WWF warns in its submission that the Welsh Government should be “exceedingly cautious” about tapping into a new source of fossil fuels, claims shale gas would have a “negligible impact” on gas prices, and flags up “unacceptable risks to people and the environment”.  

However, UK Onshore Gas Ltd states: “There is immense potential for commercial unconventional gas production in Wales.” MORE
