Together with the Ostsee-Pipeline-Anbindungsleitung – Baltic Sea Pipeline Link (OPAL), which has already been in operation for approximately one year, the North European Gas Pipeline (NEL) provides a link between the major natural gas reserves in Siberia and the West European gas supply network.
The pipeline transports natural gas arriving through Nord Stream in Lubmin near Greifswald in Germany, through Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Lower Saxony to the network connection point at Rehden, from where the natural gas can either be transported onward to German and West European customers or be fed directly into West Europe’s largest gas storage facility
NEL Gastransport GmbH Director Christoph von dem Bussche said “NEL plugs a gap in the European natural gas transport infrastructure and, together with Nord Stream and the already completed OPAL pipeline link, strengthens supply security in Germany and Europe.” MORE
