Equinor makes second Barents Sea find in weeks

Norway's Equinor has made its second hydrocarbon discovery in weeks near the Johan Castberg field in the Barents Sea, the company announced on June 9.

After striking oil at the Snofonn North well in late May, Equinor has now discovered oil and gas at the Skavl Sto well, 5 km south-southeast of the Johan Castberg discovery well. Its size is estimated at 5-10mn barrels of recoverable oil equivalent.

The Skavl Sto find may be tied back to the Castberg field, Equinor said. It will be matured together with Snofonn North and the past Skavl and Isflak discoveries, made in 2014 and 2021 respectively.

"The new discovery and information will be viewed in the light of other discoveries in the area, and together with our partners we will consider further development of the area," Equinor's vice president for exploration and production north, Kristin Westvik, said.

Equinor operates licence 532 where Skavl Sto is located with a 50% interest, while En-owned Var Energi and Norway's Petoro own shares of 30% and 20% respectively.
