Equinor makes Norway's first discovery of the year
Equinor and partners Wintershall Dea and Petoro have made a commercial gas discovery at production licence 1128 in the Norwegian Sea, with its size estimated at 12.6-69.2mn barrels of oil equivalent.
Obelix Upflank is the first discovery to be made off Norway this year, Equinor said on January 18. It is located 23 km south of the Irpa gas find. Irpa is due to be tied back to the Aasta Hansteen platform, extending its lifespan by seven years.

"Discoveries near existing infrastructure require less volume in order to be commercial developed, and can be quickly put on stream with low CO2 emissions," Equinor's senior vice president for exploration and production north, Grete Haaland, said in a statement. "We will together with our partners consider tie-back of this discovery to Irpa."
A plan for development and operation was filed for Irpa in November 2022. The project is set to cost NOK14.8bn ($1.5bn).
