Eni discusses energy initiatives with Indonesian president Joko Widodo

Eni, the Italian energy major, on February 2 announced discussions between its CEO, Claudio Descalzi, and the president of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, concerning the company's ongoing activities in Indonesia and outlined initiatives in the realms of energy transition and decarbonisation.

Key highlights of Eni's achievements in 2023 include the discovery of 5 trillion ft3 of gas with the Geng North-1 well in the North Ganal PSC, the acquisition of Indonesia Deepwater Development (IDD) assets from Chevron, and the strengthening of Eni's position in key exploration and production blocks of the Kutei basin after acquiring Neptune.

Descalzi outlined the development plans for IDD assets and the establishment of the new Geng North production hub in East Kalimantan. These developments are expected to significantly enhance Indonesia's gas potential, considering the near-field exploration potential in Eni-operated blocks, largely de-risked following the Geng North discovery, Eni said.

The planned establishment of a new 1bn ft3/day gas production hub in the northern Kutei basin and the extension of the plateau at 750mn ft3/day in existing facilities in the southern Kutei basin are poised to boost Indonesia's gas production, catering to both domestic use and export, the company added. Additionally, ongoing projects such as East Merakes and Maha fields are expected to positively impact local content and increase utilization at the Bontang LNG plant.

During the meeting, the ministry of energy and mineral resources of Indonesia and Eni signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate in the fields of energy transition and decarbonisation. The MoU allows Eni to assess the potential production of agri-feedstock for Enilive biorefineries, analyse carbon capture utilisation and storage, identify energy efficiency opportunities, and evaluate nature- and technology-based projects, including clean cooking, to offset residual emissions.
