Eni begins gas production from Argo Cassiopea field offshore Italy
Eni has commenced gas production from the Argo Cassiopea field offshore Italy, the company announced on August 19.
Gas from one of the four subsea wells drilled in recent months in the Strait of Sicily is being transported via a 60 km subsea pipeline to the Gela processing plant. There, it will be processed before being fed into the national grid, contributing to Italy's energy supply.

The Argo Cassiopea production project, operated by Eni in a joint venture with Energean, has begun production three years after construction work commenced. Production is conducted entirely underwater, with no visual impact and near-zero emissions. Eni also noted that the installation of 3.6 MWp of photovoltaic panels will ensure the project achieves carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
“Argo Cassiopea plays a central role in Eni's strategy to increase the use of domestic natural gas for energy security and as a low-emission source,” the company stated.
Argo Cassiopea's reserves are estimated at around 10bn m³ of gas, with peak annual production expected to reach 1.5bn m³.
