Egypt Will Continue Gas Supply to Jordan

Egypt will continue to provide gas to Jordan at preferential prices, according to Iran's Ambassador to Jordan Khaled Tharwat.

Tharwat said that although Egypt has cut its gas supply to Syria, Lebanon, Spain and Israel, it will not stop supplying Jordan with the fuel, Jordan Times reported.

Cairo has come under increasing popular pressure since the January 25, 2011 uprising to end gas exports to Jordan and Israel and prioritise the resource for domestic use, the newspaper said.

The Kingdom, which currently buys 97 per cent of its energy needs, used to import about 240 million cubic feet (mcf) of Egyptian gas a day.

The pipeline carrying Egyptian gas to Jordan and Israel has been blown up repeatedly in the past few months in Egypt, cutting off the supply. The latest attack on the pipeline took place in July.

Before July's explosion, Jordan received some 80mcf from Egypt per day, well below the 240mcf outlined in a 15-year bilateral agreement inked by Cairo and Amman in 2002.
