Dutch Gate LNG terminal boosts annual capacity
The operator of the Gate LNG terminal at the major Dutch port of Rotterdam has taken the decision to add 0.5bn m³/yr to its 12bn m³/yr send-out capacity, it said July 1, in response to binding expressions of interest from the market.
The joint venture between Vopak and Gasunie said it had seen very high utilisation as illustrated by a record regasification of around 1.1bn m³ in May. The additional send-out capacity is planned to become available from October 1, 2024.

Operational since 2012, the terminal has often been idle owing to low European hub gas prices. This year has seen very high interest in LNG, however, owing to the need to refill storage after a long cold winter. Low availability of renewable electricity generation in some countries has also added to the demand for gas, leading to exceptionally high prices and even triggering some switching from gas to coal in the power sector.
The company said it had received its first carbon-neutral LNG cargo in May.
