Croatia Readies for Gas Flows to Hungary

Croatia launched its first gas compressor station on January 17, enabling it to pump gas to Hungary, Croatian transmission system operator Plinacro reported in a statement.

The station at Veika Ludina, some 60 km east of Zagreb, was built at a cost of kuna 209.5mn ($31.2mn). It was launched during a ceremony attended by Croatia's prime minister Andrej Plenkovic. According to Plinacro’s website, the station will allow Croatia to pump up to 2.63bn m³/yr of gas to Hungary.

Starting next year, the station is due to handle gas from a new 2.6bn m3/yr LNG floating regasification and storage unit Croatia is building on the island of Krk. The $260mn import project – Croatia’s biggest single energy investment since independence – is designed to bolster the country’s energy security and provide it with surplus gas it can deliver to Hungary, Bosnia and its other neighbours.
