CPC to supply carbon-neutral gas to TSMC
Taiwanese state-owned utility CPC Corp has signed a pact to supply carbon-neutral gas to semiconductor major Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), it said on September 16 without giving any details of the value of the deal or the volume to be supplied.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, minister of economic affairs Wang Mei-hua said the agreement between CPC and TSMC to use carbon-neutral gas will help Taiwan achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

CPC is the biggest LNG import in Taiwan and earlier this month received a carbon-neutral LNG cargo from BP. This was BP’s first delivery of carbon offset LNG in the Asia-Pacific region, following its first delivery globally to Sempra LNG at the Energia Costa Azul terminal in Mexico in July 2021.
In August, Italy’s Eni said it reached an agreement to deliver an LNG cargo to Taiwan that has been certified as carbon neutral. Eni will send the LNG from the Bontang terminal in Indonesia to CPC via the Yung Ang receiving terminal on the island.
Taiwan plans to shift away from nuclear energy and sees natural gas as part of a low-carbon future. CPC mandated a 50% share of natural gas for Taiwan’s electricity generation by 2024.
