CNOOC's Liwan Gas Project Reaches Milestone

Development on the Liwan 3-1 natural gas project has reached a major milestone with the completion of Asia's biggest deep water platform in the South China Sea by China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC), China Daily reported.

The project will have an annual processing capacity of 12 billion cubic meters after completion and will be put into operation by the end of the year, CNOOC said.

Gas from the project will be supplied to power plants and other industrial users in Guangdong province, China Daily said.

The gas field, which was discovered in 2006 jointly by CNOOC and Canada's Husky Energy, is 1,500 meters deep.

CNOOC's $1 billion deep-sea rig — known as Offshore Oil 981 — was brought in for the construction of the Liwan 3-1 platform in March, China Daily said.
