Cnooc's Binhai Terminal Ready by mid-2021

Cnooc Gas and Power, a unit of state-owned Cnooc, said June 29 its Binhai LNG terminal project in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu will be ready by June 2021.

The project consists of the terminal and other supporting pipeline infrastructure as well as a power plant. In the first phase the LNG terminal will have a capacity of 3 million metric tons/yr.

Cnooc Gas and Power held a site promotion meeting June 28 at Binhai port of Yancheng City. The company stated that the Binhai LNG terminal will be a key project for Jiangsu province. 

Xinhua, China's official news agency, reported an earlier expected completion date of December 2020 for the planned terminal but did not explain why.

Cnooc Gas and Power at present operates eight LNG import terminals at Tianjin, Shanghai, Ningbo, Putian, Yuedong, Dapen, Zhuhai and Hainan. Earlier this month the company started work on the first phase of 3mn mt/yr Zhangzhou LNG import terminal in Fujian province. The company also approved the expansion of its Tianjin LNG terminal.

With demand for LNG expected to rise in coming years, Chinese state-owned companies are enhancing their LNG import infrastructure. Asia’s biggest economy imported record LNG volumes last year as consumers switched from coal to gas.
