Cnooc Starts Work on Zhangzhou Terminal

Construction work on the first phase of Cnooc Gas and Power’s 3mn mt/yr Zhangzhou LNG import terminal in Fujian province has officially commenced with the approval of the preliminary design and budget, it said May 31. This will be company’s 10th LNG import terminal.

The project involves construction of an LNG import terminal with a port-to-dock capacity of 260,000m3 tankers and three storage facilities of 160,000m3 each at Zhangzhou, Fujian province. The project will be constructed in two phases with investment of yuan 6.2bn ($970mn) and is expected to be ready by 2021.

The Zhangzhou LNG import terminal will increase gas supply in Fujian province and other regions in southern China such as Guangdong, Guangxi, Zhejiang and Jiangxi, Cnooc Gas and Power said.

Cnooc Gas and Power, a unit of Cnooc, operates eight LNG import terminals at Tianjin, Shanghai, Ningbo, Putian, Yuedong, Dapeng, Zhuhai and Hainan. Shenzhen LNG terminal, its ninth, is expected to be commissioned soon. Last week, Cnooc Gas and Power commenced work on a pipeline to connect Shenzhen LNG terminal with Dapeng LNG terminal. The company also approved the expansion of its Tianjin LNG terminal.

With demand for LNG expected to rise in coming years, Chinese state-owned companies are enhancing their LNG import infrastructure. Asia’s biggest economy imported record LNG volumes last year as consumers switched from coal to gas.
