CNOOC Reports First Ultra-Deep Gas Discovery in South China Sea

CNOOC Ltd on Friday said it made China’s first ultra-deep natural gas discovery in Lingshui 18-1 field in South China Sea.

The Ministry of Land & Resources has certified the discovery, CNOOC said in a statement published on its website. However, the company did not provide any details about the estimate of the gas flow.

CNOOC began drilling the Lingshui 18-1-1 exploration well last October in water depths of 1,688 metres. Last December the well was declared a success. With this find, the company said, China has become one of the very few countries with successful ultra-deep gas discoveries.

The discovery is located close to another deepsea gas find Lingshui 17-2.
