Indonesian LNG Producer to Harness AI

Two Asian firms involved in the LNG sector have agreed on the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions to improve the productivity of a LNG plant in the region, said Japan's Chiyoda August 6.

Chiyoda Corporation and Indonesia’s Donggi-Senoro LNG (DSLNG) will develop AI for use at Donggi-Senoro's plant.

This will be the first LNG project in the world where innovative AI technology/Deep Learning is introduced to an LNG plant in operation, said Chiyoda, allowing an increase in LNG production in a safe and quick manner without any plant facility modification. Following a proof of concept and bilateral discussions, the Japanese firm said that both companies are keen to move on to its "full-scale development."

Chiyoda is collaborating with its strategic alliance partner, GRID. Chiyoda is responsible for total project management, including analysis of process data, assessment of potential impacts caused by an increase in LNG production, feasibility check for operational parameters presented by AI while GRID is responsible for AI development.

The DSLNG plant in the province of Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, produces about 2mn mt/yr of LNG, and was set up in 2007 as a joint venture of Pertamina 29%, Medco 20%, and Mitsubishi Corporation 51%. Since February 2011, ownership  changed to Pertamina 29%, Medco 11.1% and Sulawesi LNG Development 59.9% - the latter a joint venture of Mitsubishi and Korea Gas Corporation.
