China's CNOOC makes offshore gas breakthrough

Chinese energy company CNOOC said June 25 that production had started at the country’s first-ever deepwater natural gas field.

The start up of the offshore Lingshui 17-2 gas field in the South China Sea was “China’s first offshore large-sized independent deep water gas field,” the company said.

In May, CNOOC started operations at the Liuhua 29-2 gas field, located in the eastern South China Sea.

CNOOC has a semi-submersible platform situated and associated subsea pipeline networks in place at the Lingshui 17-2 gas field. The company has 11 production wells planned and expects the field will achieve peak production of 328mn ft3/day in 2022.

“In the future, CNOOC Limited will continue to enhance our exploration and development activities, strive to expand reserves and production, increase the proportion of green, low-carbon as well as clean energy, and hence to support the goal of carbon emission peak and carbon neutrality to be achieved at an early date,” company chairman Wang Dongjin said.
