China finishes Hainan gas pipeline

Chinese oil and gas infrastructure operator PipeChina said on July 23 it had finished construction of a natural gas pipeline to supply China's southernmost Hainan island province.

A new section of the pipeline has been completed that runs for 289 km along Hainan's east coast and can carry up to 1.5bn m3/year of gas. This supply will help the island cut its dependence on coal-fired power, reducing its coal demand by around 23mn metric tons.

The latest portion brings the pipeline's total length to 875 km. Its overall transport capacity is 4.1bn m3/yr.

The Hainan province is expected to consume over 10bn m3/yr of gas by 2025, PipeChina said. The island gets its gas from domestic fields and imports it in LNG form.
