Canada’s Coastal GasLink completes pipe delivery
Coastal GasLink, the C$6.6bn (US$5.4bn) natural gas pipeline project that will link the LNG Canada liquefaction terminal on BC’s northern coast to gas fields in northeast BC, said May 12 it had completed the delivery of 692 km of line pipe to stockpile locations along the project’s 670-km route.
The sections of pipe, most of which were made in Canada and collectively weighing 450,000 tons, were delivered by contractor Premay Pipeline Hauling. Its drivers, working with local indigenous partners to plan delivery routes, used 50 trucks travelling an estimated 5.5mn km – that’s the equivalent of 137 trips around the equator – to deliver the pipe to 16 laydown yards between Groundbirch in northeast BC and Kitimat, where the LNG Canada terminal is being built.

“It’s common to order extra quantity of pipe on projects so that we can manage cut and waste as well as allow for any design changes,” said Cathy Wang, the CGL project manager who directed pipe delivery. “Given that driving is one of our largest safety risks on the project with weather constraints, terrain and road conditions, I’m especially proud that we worked with no safety incidents.”
The perfect safety record earned both Wang and Premay CEO Safety Leadership Awards from TC Energy, which owns a 25% interest in the CGL partnership.
