Canada invites “ambitious” projects to achieve net zero
The government of Canada said March 18 it was inviting industry leaders to put forward their “most ambitious projects” to help the country achieve its net zero ambitions, drawing on C$8bn (US$6.3bn) of funding committed through its Net Zero Accelerator.
“Our government is calling for ambitious and innovative projects from companies in high-emitting sectors to help Canada scale up our clean-tech sector as we chart a path to net-zero,” innovation, science and industry minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said. “By supporting businesses that understand the economic benefit of lower emissions, we're prioritising a strong and sustainable economy, Canadian jobs and ensuring a cleaner future for generations to come.”
Potential industry partners are being encouraged to engage with Champagne’s department to explore potential projects along two paths, Path 1 for projects in high-emitting sectors that offer significant, short-term emission reductions within the next decade and Path 2 for transformational ideas – those that may be in earlier stages of development but which have long-term potential to set high-emitting sectors on a path to net zero by 2050, or sooner.
Potential partners are being invited to an information session on April 5 and for Path 1 proposals to be submitted by June 30. Path 2 is already open for submissions, and will remain open on an ongoing basis as companies move their projects through the development process.
