BP wins gas rights in Egypt: press

BP has secured gas exploration rights at Egypt's offshore King Mariout concession in the west Mediterranean, the company announced on June 28.

BP is receiving 100% of the exploration rights to the concession area, which spans 2,600 km2 of the west Nile Delta, in waters 500 to 2,000 m deep.

BP won the concession after taking part in last year's limited bid round, organised by the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company. The award comes after BP also secured rights to the EGY-MED-E5 concession with its partners in the Nile Delta earlier this year.

Receiving the new rights "supports our ambitious plans to develop the Nile Delta offshore region by linking it to the infrastructure and facilities established by BP in order to meet the growing demand for gas in Egypt," BP said in its statement.

BP's flagship gas project in Egypt is the West Nile Delta development, which produces close to 1bn ft3/day. It also has interests in the Atoll field Satis West and the Eni-operated Zohr field.
