BP starts Phase 2 at Thunder Horse
UK energy company BP said September 28 that operations began at the second phase of its Thunder Horse oil and gas property in the US waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
The company started the South Expansion Phase 2 project, where peak production is forecast at 25,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. The launch is part of an effort to boost oil and gas production from the Gulf of Mexico.

“This has been a pivotal year for our Gulf of Mexico business as we continue to start up new projects,” said Starlee Sykes, BP’s senior vice president for the Gulf of Mexico and Canada. “Bringing high-margin, resilient barrels online in basins we know best is central to BP’s strategy.”
A similar expansion project at Thunder Horse was brought online in 2018.
The launch of the South Expansion project follows a long stretch of production disruptions from Hurricane Ida and Tropical Storm Nicholas. At a peak in early September, nearly all of the oil and gas production from the US waters of the Gulf of Mexico was offline because of storm activity.
Counting Thunder Horse, BP operates four deepwater installations in the Gulf of Mexico. A fifth platform is slated to begin operations next year.
