BP reviews hydrogen potential in Australia
The Australian division of BP said September 7 it was drawing on state support to conduct a green hydrogen production study at a refinery in Western Australia.
BP said it would work through a partnership with Australian lender Macquarie Group on a feasibility study meant to assess transitioning the UK company’s refinery at Kwinana in Western Australia into a green hydrogen hub.

“The project marks a significant step in BP’s broader plans to repurpose its Kwinana site as an integrated energy hub that produces and distributes fuel for the future,” the company said. “BP is already underway with plans to develop a renewable fuels plant at the site, producing sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel.”
Green hydrogen uses renewable energy to power an electrolyser that can split water into oxygen and hydrogen, with little to no net carbon emissions.
BP Australia will receive A$300,000 to redevelop the Kwinana facility. The government of Western Australia has already committed almost A$30mn towards developing a job-creating renewable hydrogen industry.
