BC utility re-opening RNG subscription programme
Canadian gas utility FortisBC said September 14 it would re-open its renewable natural gas (RNG) subscription programme to its customers on October 15.
In late 2019 it had to shut down the offering, under which customers can choose to receive a specific percentage – ranging from 5% to 100% – of their monthly demand as RNG at a small premium to fossil natural gas, when demand raced ahead of supply.

Since then, the utility has added 15 new RNG supply agreements, all of which have been approved by the British Columbia Utilities Commission, which regulates utilities in the province.
“The reopening of the programme showcases just how hard our renewable gas team has worked to increase RNG supply to meet growing demand in just two years,” said Jason Wolfe, director of energy solutions with FortisBC. “Demand for RNG is still growing with over 350 customers on a wait list to sign on, and we are pleased to offer this programme again as a way for them to reduce their carbon footprint now and in the future.”
FortisBC first started its RNG programme in 2011 and was the first utility in North America to offer RNG to its customers as a way for them to lower their greenhouse gas emissions. At the time the programme was paused, about 10,000 customers were subscribed.
