Baker Hughes to capture flared gas in Iraq
The Iraqi government said September 19 it had established a partnership with US upstream services company Baker Hughes to capture gas from fields in Nasariyah province, Kurdish media agency Rudaw reported.
Work at the al-Gharraf fields in southern Iraq is part of the government’s plan to “capture all the gas that is being flared, to increase the national output of gas, to preserve a clean environment, in compliance with international treaties,” oil minister Ihsan Abdul-Jabbar Ismail was quoted as saying.

Iraq struggles to utilise its own natural gas reserves due to outdated infrastructure, depending heavily on neighbouring Iran for resources.
The US government has waived sanctions related to Iran so that Iraq could continue getting natural gas resources.
French major TotalEnergies in early September signed agreements to help Iraq raise oil production at the Artawi oilfield, also in southern Iraq, from the current 85,000 barrels/day to 210,000 b/d.
The company will also help build a 600mn ft3/d complex for treating associated gas at the site. This complex will provide commercial gas that can help reduce Iraq's imports from Iran, which were disrupted recently.
According to World Bank estimates, Iraq flared about 614bn ft3 of its own natural gas last year.
