Baker Hughes secures contract for gas-boosting project in Algeria

Baker Hughes has been awarded a contract by Sonatrach for a gas-boosting project in the Hassi R’Mel gas field, Algeria, the company announced on May 23. The contract is part of a larger order awarded to a consortium comprising Baker Hughes and Tecnimont, a subsidiary of the technology and engineering group Maire.

Under the contract, Baker Hughes will supply 20 compression trains based on Frame 5 gas turbine and BCL compressor technology. These will be installed across three gas boosting stations within the Hassi R’Mel gas field, located 550 km south of Algiers. Hassi R’Mel is the largest gas field in Algeria and a key energy supply source for both Algeria and Europe.

In 2023, Algeria became the second-largest gas supplier to Europe, according to Bloomberg NEF, further solidifying its role in enhancing the continent's energy security. This is especially significant for Italy, where Algeria is the largest single source of gas imports.

The Hassi R’Mel project is part of a broader strategic collaboration between Algeria and Italy. This includes recently signed agreements aimed at fostering bilateral cooperation and providing financial support for Algeria’s gas production as part of the Mattei Plan.
