B.Grimm Power becomes first private company in Thailand to import LNG

Thailand's B.Grimm Power has successfully imported its first LNG cargo, totaling 65,000 tonnes, marking a significant milestone as the first private company in the country to import the commodity, the company announced on August 26 via LinkedIn.

The imported LNG will be distributed to small power producers (SPP), with the initial supply going to 10 of B.Grimm's combined cycle co-generation power plants. The LNG cargo was received at state-owned PTT's LNG terminal in Map Ta Phut.

"This milestone supports the government’s natural gas liberalisation policy, which will help reduce the cost of electricity generation in the private sector and positively impact the industrial sector and Thailand's economy," B.Grimm stated.

B.Grimm, a subsidiary of BGRIM, established an LNG joint venture with PTT in 2021. The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) authorised B.Grimm as one of seven LNG importers in 2020, breaking PTT's monopoly on LNG imports.

Initially, the company was allowed to import 650,000 tonnes/year of LNG to supply power plants under the SPP scheme. In June 2022, B.Grimm LNG received an additional license to import 550,000 tonnes/year to supply 18 BGRIM-owned power plants.
