Australia's Senex announces decarbonisation plan

Australian explorer Senex Energy on October 11 announced a decarbonisation action plan that details its ambition to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its operational footprint to net-zero by 2040.

The company’s decarbonisation action plan includes a target for the company to achieve a 30% reduction in total GHG emission intensity while also expanding its production capacity to 60 petajoules (PJ)/year by 2025 and in the longer term, achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.

Senex CEO Ian Davies said that his company is committed to supporting the global transition to a cleaner energy future and low-carbon economy.

"Natural gas is integral to meeting demand for reliable and affordable energy and we are focused on being the natural gas supplier of choice through the transition,” he said. "We plan to expand our valuable natural gas business to deliver 60 PJe per year by year-end FY25 and, at the same time, materially reduce the carbon intensity of our operations and use our knowledge and technology to help our customers to do the same.”

Australia’s peak oil and gas body Appea welcomed the announcement and said that Senex’s plan to reduce emissions across its operations is yet another example of the industry walking the walk on climate change.

“This latest announcement from Senex provides further evidence that Australian oil and gas producers are committed to reducing emissions and achieving climate change as part of an economy-wide effort,” Appea CEO Andrew McConville said. “This is just the latest example of Appea members walking the walk when it comes to climate change action.”

“Natural gas has an important part to play in ensuring countries around the world can meet their emissions targets into the future,” McConville added.
