APA opens NGI gas pipe in Western Australia

Ausstralian energy infrastructure company APA has officially opened the Northern Goldfields Interconnect (NGI) pipeline in Western Australia, the company said on July 28.

This development marks the completion of a 580-km buried pipeline that interconnects the Dampier to Bunbury natural gas pipeline with the Goldfields gas pipeline. The NGI project enables enhanced access to existing and potential natural gas production regions and gas storage infrastructure, with a particular focus on the emerging Perth basin, APA said.

The NGI pipeline commences at Ambania, situated approximately 50 km east of Geraldton, and connects to the Goldfields gas pipeline, approximately 40 km south of Leinster. This integration creates an extensive interconnected gas pipeline network that spans 2,690 km from north to south and west to east.

"This infrastructure is the missing link in Western Australia’s gas network. For years an interconnected gas grid on the east coast has helped manage supply and demand challenges across key markets. With the completion of the NGI, linking Western Australia’s two major north- south gas pipelines, APA will ensure greater flexibility and security to meet the state’s long-term energy needs,” APA CEO Adam Watson said.

Western Australia's minister for mines and petroleum; energy; hydrogen industry and industrial relations, Bill Johnston said projects like the NGI drive economic diversification and growth.
