Alberta launches competition to reshape energy systems

The government of Alberta, through its Emissions Reduction Alberta arm, issued a call April 12 for a C$50mn funding competition to modernise and strengthen the province’s energy system.

The competition, funded through Alberta’s Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund, is looking for proposals that explore energy transport and distribution technology, energy storage, digital solutions for energy management, grid-interactive building efficiency technologies, low-emission vehicle infrastructure and fleets. The competition is open to all energy carriers, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, with integration between systems encouraged.

Successful applicants are eligible for up to C$10mn with a minimum request of C$250,000, with the ERA’s contribution limited to 50% of a project’s eligible expenses. While technology solutions can originate from anywhere globally, they must be piloted, demonstrated, or deployed in Alberta.

Applications are due by June 15, 2023, and more information can be found here on the ERA’s website.
