Norway to Electrify Biggest Gas Field

Norwegian contractor Aker Solutions has won a contract to electrify two platforms at Norway's biggest gas field Troll, the company reported on February 16.

The agreement, which needs the final investment decision from the Troll operator and regulatory approval, covers topside work at the Equinor-operated Troll B and C platforms, including the installation of equipment for receiving power from the shore at Kollnes via cable, thereby reducing emissions. The platforms currently rely on gas-fired generation.

Aker Solution will undertake engineering, procurement, construction and prefabrication of systems, and their installation. The work will start immediately and run until the end of 2025. Aker Solution was hired for front-end engineering design work on the electrification plan in January last year.

"Aker Solutions has extensive experience from delivering such low-carbon solutions, and we aim to be a leading contractor in this market," CEO Kjetel Digre said in a statement.  The company will book the contract in the first quarter of 2021, it said, revealing the deal's value at kroner 2-3bn ($237-356mn).

Troll, situated 65 km west of Bergen, produced 31.6bn m3 of gas last year, accounting for just less than 30% of national supply. Equinor also plans to electrify facilities at the Sleipner and Gina Krog fields.
