Aker BP makes gas discovery in Barents Sea

Aker BP has made a gas discovery in exploration well 7324/6-2 – Ferdinand Nord – on the Norwegian side of the Barents Sea, the Norwegian Offshore Directorate announced on June 20.

This is the first well in production licence 1170, which was awarded in the Awards in Predefined Areas in 2022 (APA 2021). Preliminary estimates indicate that the size of the discovery is between 0.52 – 0.75mn m3 of recoverable oil equivalent.

“The licensees are assessing the discovery together with other discoveries and prospects in the area with a view toward a potential development,” the directorate said.

Production Licence 1170 is operated by Aker BP with a 35% stake. Norway’s Equinor also owns a 35% interest, Petoro owns 20%, and Japan’s Inpex has a 10% stake.
