Afro Energy, a joint venture between Sydney-listed Kinetiko Energy and South African Badimo Gas, has completed a well workover programme at its Amersfoort coalbed methane (CBM) project in South Africa, Kinetiko said on February 16. 

Afro has started the planning and preparation for short-term pilot gas production project, whereby gas from the KA-03PTR well and possibly the KA-03PT2 well would be sold to compressed natural gas (CNG) traders for distribution to industries in the Johannesburg region. “It was determined as part of this planning that the two wells should undergo workovers to maximise gas flow rates and recovery,” Kinetiko said.

Kinetiko stated that Afro would immediately start flow rate and equipment testing at the KA-03PTR well. The company intends to apply for full production rights for ER56 tenement as soon as possible after the KA 03PTR well comes on stream, and seek certification of maiden gas reserves. 

Kinetiko has a 49% stake in two onshore gas licences in the Amersfoort area. Under a farm-out agreement with Badimo, Kinetiko is the project operator. According to Kinetiko, the Amersfoort area of the Eastern Transvaal coalfield between Johannesburg and Durban is one of the most prospective areas for CBM.
