As oil prices have continued to plunge over the last six months, politicians and analysts alike have talked about the serious implications a sustained drop has for the economies of Russia, Venezuela and other iconic oil states. Media coverage has often focused on the apparent battle for supremacy between OPEC and American shale producers. And today the internet is abuzz with billionaire investor and Saudi Prince Alwaleed’s prediction that oil prices will never again reach $100 per barrel.
However, one crucial component of the equation has been largely left out of the discussion: Africa.
